The Intensive · 2 Days / 10 Hours
Reframing street dance education.
Most resources teach you moves with no context for how to use them, or lean on abstract talk about “feeling” with no concrete way to develop it. The result is a false impression of how freestyle actually works. It can be frustrating, confusing, and disheartening. It doesn't have to be.
We demystify how freestyle works.
CypherReady's two-day, 10-hour intensive is led by faculty drawn from Shadow Puppetz, a Chicago crew of freestyle dance experts, competitors, and educators. It focuses on making street dances like popping, waving, tutting, and animation accessible for all skill levels, and shows participants the mechanisms through which freestyle dance is actually created.
Through a combination of drills, creative exercises, lectures, and demonstrations, attendees learn the discipline of popping, then gain the creative tools to use it. We teach the foundation before anything gets layered on top.
Two days, built to layer.
The Foundation
The fundamentals of popping: how to create a rhythmic relationship with the music, the groove, and the pop itself.
The goal
An extremely comfortable base of simple, well-defined movement that lets you dance to any music.
The Layers
The concepts we layer on top of the dance, from tutting to waving to animation, and how simple ideas combine to create visual complexity.
The goal
A personal style that is rich, expressive, and authentic, built from layers you understand.
Freestyle is foundational for every dancer.
An understanding of freestyle is vital regardless of your long-term goals. Whether they are recreational, commercial, or professional, this work sets you on a path to freestyle dance success.
Body awareness & confidence
Concrete, drillable control over how you move, the kind that holds up in a class, a battle, or a show.
Creative skills
The mechanisms through which freestyle is created, so you can generate movement instead of memorizing it.
Music theory for dancers
An ear for structure and musicality that is critical to creating choreography, not just performing it.
